With VE Day happening this month, to mark the occasion we're proud to introduce our new Forces Family Support Policy.
In January 2023, RSA became signatories of the Armed Forces Covenant with a pledge to ensure all those who serve, or have served, in His Majesty’s Armed Forces, and their families, are treated fairly in the workplace. As part of this pledge, and adding to our celebrations for the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, our Armed Forces Employee Resource Group (ERG) are proud to announce our new Forces Family Support Policy.
What does the new policy mean for RSA colleagues?
The aim of the policy is to support our colleagues with direct family members (a spouse, partner or immediate relative) who are either serving in the Armed Forces, or are in their resettlement period after leaving service. Colleagues will receive up to five days paid leave per calendar year, and/or a temporary change in working arrangements where required.
Why this policy matters
We understand that family members of those serving in the Armed Forces often face significant challenges through deployments, military exercises, and location moves. Often, these events come with little-to-no notice. This can lead to social isolation, stress, uncertainty and parental/relationship pressures, all on top of maintaining a professional career.
Previous research conducted by Barclays suggests 66% of military spouses feel having a partner in the Armed Forces negatively impacted their career in some way, with many having to sacrifice their own career to accommodate their partner’s. 33% had to leave a job or take reduced hours because of it, and a further 15% had to take a job below their level of experience. Our new policy seeks to reduce some of these pressures amongst affected RSA colleagues.
