Updating the Motor Insurance Database

Check and amend your motor fleet customers’ vehicle schedules on the national Motor Insurance Database (MID).

Tackling uninsured drivers

The national Motor Insurance Database (MID) is a vital tool for tackling uninsured driving. Holding details of over 30 million vehicles, it’s fundamental that data on this database is quickly and accurately completed as soon as your customer’s insurance commences or changes.

Under the Continuous Insurance Enforcement (CIE) system, the Motor Insurance Bureau (MIB) and the DVLA are working in partnership to identify uninsured vehicles by comparing their records with those held on the MID.

Key points to remember

MID recognises that the provision of all of the necessary policy and vehicle data is a joint effort between insurers and policyholders.

To reduce the risk of drivers being stopped and vehicles being seized, all brokers should:

  • Submit new policy information to us as soon as cover is required
  • Confirm renewals no later than three days prior to policy expiry to ensure vehicles remain visible on the database

We are happy for customers to supply the relevant information themselves – or for you as their broker to supply it on their behalf.

A customer arranging for any other third party to provide vehicle detail on their behalf does so at their own discretion. All data must be submitted on our website.

We must be advised directly if a policy has not been renewed.
